The Work of the Innocents

The Society of the Innocents was formed as a means of responding to Parliament’s passing of the Abortion Act of 1967. With soaring abortion figures, the Motherwell Diocese decided to take a radical step to offer an alternative to abortion through counselling and advice, and by supporting women who were overwhelmed with the prospect of raising a child by providing material assistance and offering accommodation.

Srs Rosaria McGeady and Maria Goretti Frizzell were invited to manage the residential accommodation in Coatbridge from 1977 and when the need for accommodation grew, they moved to Bothwell in 1978 and East Kilbride in 1985.

However, changing attitudes in the late 1980’s has meant that the need for residential provision has declined; yet the advice, support and practical assistance offered by the Society is as much needed today as ever before.
Today, Srs Maria Goretti and Rosaria continue with the work of the Innocents at their home in Viewpark Road, Motherwell. Here the work of the Innocents continues to offer free pregnancy tests, layettes and most importantly, counselling services.
As the Society has continued to grow and develop, a large number of Pro-Life Cells have been formed. Pro-Life Cells try to give provide practical as well as spiritual support for the Society. These Cells meet for prayer, learning and discussing Pro-Life issues and caring, often practically by organising fundraising activities to provide for buying layettes for those in need. One of the main aims of the Innocents is to educate the youth of today. For some time now, counsellors go into schools and give talks to Pro-Life Cells and to 4th, 5th and 6th year students on the work of the Innocents.
If you would like to support to know more about the work of the Innocents or would like a Pro-Life Cell formed in your school or parish, please contact Sr Maria Goretti at 01698 262699.
